Primary Curriculum Information
We offer a broad and balanced curriculum with a strong focus on developing the mechanics of reading and writing and basic numeracy skills very early on. We enrich our curriculum by providing great experiences which stimulate curiosity and motivate children to learn, whether this is through educational visits, themed days or events, visitors to school or family learning days.
Our Reception pupils follow the Early Years Framework and pupils in Years 1-6 follow National Curriculum programmes of study.
We feel it is important to work in partnership with parents and so we have produced a brief guide to end of year expectations for each year group for literacy and maths. These are given to parents at the ‘Meet the Teacher’ sessions each September. Whilst all children will have differing needs and attainment levels these guides offer parents information on what expectations are for an average child in that year group. Copies of those guides are available on request at the office.
Learning to read is a key skill for our youngest learners to master. In Reception and KS 1 we use ‘Bug Club Reading Books’ and ‘Bug Club Phonics’ schemes to teach reading. Our phonics programme is carefully structured to allow children to master phonics and become confident, enthusiastic readers.
Each child has a personalised homepage where they'll find the eBooks they've been allocated by the teacher and motivating rewards. The online reading world ensures children can access independent reading resources anywhere at any time.
Bug Club books are graded into colour-coded Book Band levels, and within each level there is a carefully planned progression of books. This fine progression gives children plenty of opportunity to develop their reading skills and master each fine step while moving through the reading programme.
For older children in year 5 and 6 we use Accelerated Reader which enables the teacher to manage and monitor children’s independent reading practise. The children pick a book at their level and read at their pace. When finished they take a quiz on the computer, feedback is given and the teacher then uses this to set goals for the child and direct ongoing reading practise.

To ensure that our children always write within a context that makes writing exciting and meaningful we plan from teaching sequences developed by the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) Power of Reading Project using core books. You can find out more by going to www.clpe.org.uk
We use Maths No Problem, which is a scheme of work based on the highly successful Singaporean approach to mathematics. This scheme meets the expectations of the 2014 National Curriculum and it addresses the higher level of mathematics now expected in each year.
This approach is geared towards ensuring children gain mastery in maths and develop good number sense. Children will spend more time, exploring each topic, reinforcing it with ample practice, before moving onto the next one. All ideas are built on top of previous knowledge and children are given multiple opportunities to develop relationships between topics.
Foundation subjects such as science, art, design and technology, humanities, RE and music are taught in units which allow children to consider what they know about a topic and what they would like to find out. Teachers then carefully tailor the teaching to the needs of the class and plan a range of challenges and activities which take into account children’s questions and interests as well as end of year expectations for each subject.The children also experience specialist teaching from secondary teachers in subject such as PE, French, Computing and Art.
We have updated all of our curriculum planning to be in line with the new national curriculum and developed new assessment methods which will allow us to measure progress and attainment across the curriculum.
