Design & Technology and 3D Design

Subject Overview

Design & Technology and 3D Design at Langdon Academy supports students in developing core knowledge and skills. The curriculum is designed to be engaging, inclusive and aligned with national standards.

Curriculum Intent

We aim to develop learners who are knowledgeable, confident and prepared for future study and careers. Our intent is to provide a curriculum that supports academic success and personal growth. Our Three-dimensional Design GSCE is concerned with the designing, prototyping, modelling or making of functional and aesthetic consumer products, interiors and architecture. Students engage with appropriate processes, materials and construction techniques, using maquettes, models and working drawings, to help take their initial ideas through to realisation. These skills are developed and nurtured in our KS3 course that give students the foundation to progress with confidence onto the GCSE course.

Curriculum Implementation

The curriculum is delivered through structured lessons, hands-on learning, and regular formative assessments. Lessons are sequenced to build on prior knowledge and prepare students for examinations.

Students are encouraged to focus on Architectural design and Sculpture. They are set tasks that work with the 4 assessment objectives: researching architects, designers and crafts movements to inform their own design developments. The use of the elements of three-dimensional design aid the production of concept models and the design of building structures.

Students use of a range of architectural design materials, tools and techniques such as digital and non-digital design methods, graphic and construction materials and the generation of plans, working diagrams and models with consideration of sustainability and related environmental issues.

Curriculum Impact

We measure the impact of our curriculum through internal assessments, external qualifications, and student feedback. Our aim is for all students to achieve their full potential. We mark according to the assessment objectives and criteria set out by Pearson.

Enrichment Opportunities

Students have access to clubs, trips, guest speakers, and other enrichment activities to broaden their understanding and enthusiasm for the subject. Students are taken on a number of trips to build their cultural capital, including trips to Stratford’s Queen Elizabeth Park featuring architecture by renowned Architects Ansih Kapoor & Zaha Hadid, The Buildings Design College, and The Barbican Estate. Students are also encouraged to attend the Creative Careers fair that we hold in collaboration with Bow Arts.

Supporting Students

We support SEND, EAL and more able learners through differentiation, targeted support, and extension opportunities.

How Parents/Carers Can Support Their Child

Support practical project work at home and encourage experimentation. Visits to galleries or design exhibitions are also beneficial.

Assessment and Feedback

KS3: Assessed through design projects, making tasks, and evaluations. Feedback helps refine design process and material handling.
GCSE: Coursework portfolio (60%) and a final exam project (40%). Feedback targets refinement, experimentation, and presentation quality.

Future Pathways

3D Design supports progression into architecture, product design, furniture design, set design, and engineering. It is relevant for apprenticeships and further creative or technical study.
