Ethics & Religious Studies

Subject Overview

Ethics and Religious Studies enable students to explore religious and non-religious worldviews, fostering mutual respect and tolerance. The course promotes deep reflection on philosophical and ethical questions.

Curriculum Intent

To develop students’ understanding of diverse beliefs, cultural values, and philosophical perspectives. The course aims to build skills in analysis, debate, and independent thought, equipping students to become informed global citizens by exploring religious and non-religious world views. The course will harness the multidisciplinary approach of theology, social sciences and philosophy to inform teaching and learning.

Curriculum Implementation

The curriculum is delivered through structured lessons, hands-on learning, and regular formative assessments. Lessons are sequenced to build on prior knowledge and prepare students for examinations. Students also benefit from rich discussions which develop their understanding of different points of view, and aid their ability to critically evaluate.

Curriculum Impact

We measure the impact of our curriculum through internal assessments, external qualifications, and student feedback. Our aim is for all students to achieve their full potential. Department results show our approach is working as students achieve above the national average in National examinations.

Assessment and Feedback

KS3: Students are assessed on their ability to explain religious beliefs, analyse philosophical ideas, and evaluate ethical arguments. Feedback helps refine structure and critical analysis.
GCSE: Assessment is 100% exam-based with two main papers. Students are assessed on their ability to form justified arguments using religious teachings. Practice essays and exam-style questions are used to prepare students.

Future Pathways

RS prepares students for careers in law, politics, education, counselling, and social care. It nurtures critical thinking, empathy, and an understanding of different worldviews.
