Geography
Subject Overview
Geography helps students make sense of the world through the study of human and physical processes. It promotes global awareness and environmental responsibility.
Curriculum Intent
Our intent is to develop curious geographers who understand space and place and can grasp the concepts of human and physical geography. Students develop an understanding of the world and their place in it, helping them become better global citizens.
Curriculum Implementation
We have designed a spiral curriculum that explores human and physical strands throughout the years via the differing topics explored. We are committed to delivering high-quality education for all students, irrespective of starting point. We have topics such as ‘My Place: Newham’ for Y7, which allows students to connect secondary school geography with their experience from KS2. Core knowledge and skills are embedded in Y7 and then developed throughout KS3 and beyond. Geographical skills such as map reading, data/graphical interpretation and image analysis are developed further from KS2 with the introduction of specific geographical terminology.
In Y8, geographical skills are further developed using a range of source material and an emphasis on graphical interpretation and the communication of geographical information using a wider range of specific terminology. Students develop a deeper understanding of place and learn to look for both challenges and opportunities across a range of locations.
We further solidify the core geographical skills with an emphasis on explaining and evaluating in Year 9, which paves the way for further study at KS4. We focus on causes, impact and solutions of real-world case studies to enable students to become well informed global citizens.
Curriculum Impact
We measure the impact of our curriculum through internal assessments, external qualifications and student feedback. Our aim is for all students to achieve their full potential.

Enrichment Opportunities
Students have access to trips, scope to debate, explore current affairs and other enrichment activities to broaden their understanding and enthusiasm for Geography.
Supporting Students
We support SEND, EAL and more able learners through differentiation, targeted support, and extension opportunities.
How Parents/Carers Can Support Their Child
Discuss global news, environmental issues, and maps with your child. Watching documentaries together can broaden understanding.

Assessment and Feedback
KS3: Assessment includes map skills, extended writing, data interpretation, and fieldwork projects. Regular feedback helps students build evaluative skills and geographical understanding.
GCSE: In Year 10 and Year 11, we follow the AQA Geography specification. Three exam papers are taken covering physical and human geography, fieldwork, and decision-making. Students complete mock exams and practice questions, receiving feedback on content, structure, and clarity.
Future Pathways
Geography is relevant for careers in urban planning, environmental consultancy, sustainability, travel, and international relations. It develops skills in research, analysis, and decision-making.
