Mathematics
Subject Overview
Mathematics is an essential subject that equips students with key problem-solving and analytical skills. At Langdon Academy, we focus on building confidence and competence in numeracy for all learners, regardless of their starting point.
Curriculum Intent
To develop fluent knowledge, skills, and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts. We encourage students to reason mathematically, make logical deductions, and apply mathematical thinking in real-world contexts.
Curriculum Implementation
The curriculum is delivered through structured lessons, hands-on learning, and regular formative assessments. Lessons are sequenced to build on prior knowledge and prepare students for examinations.
There are five main topic areas that are studied:
- Number
- Algebra
- Ratio, proportion and rates of change
- Geometry and measures
- Statistics
- Probability
Curriculum Impact
We measure the impact of our curriculum through internal assessments, external qualifications, and student feedback. Formative Assessment methods are used to monitor student learning and provide ongoing feedback that can be used by teachers to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning. This is demonstrated by:
- Mini whiteboard activities
- Think-pair-share discussions of a problem
- Teacher questioning and class discussions
- Low-stakes quizzes or diagnostic tests

Enrichment Opportunities
Students have access to clubs, trips, guest speakers, and other enrichment activities to broaden their understanding and enthusiasm for the subject:
- ‘Count on Us’ competition
- ‘Maths Feast’ competition
- Chess club
- UKMT
- Numeracy week
- Pi day

Supporting Students
We support SEND, EAL and more able learners through differentiation, targeted support, and extension opportunities. We have special mathematics classes tailored to meet the needs of students who require additional support transitioning from primary to secondary mathematics.
How Parents/Carers Can Support Their Child
Parents/carers can support their child by:
- Encouraging regular revision and homework completion
- Homework is set weekly on SparxMaths
- Ensure they have the correct equipment for lessons including a Casio scientific calculator, ruler, compass, protractor, glue stick, red pen, black pen, pencil

Assessment and Feedback
KS3: Assessment includes regular end of unit tests as well as two cumulative assessments in the year. Feedback focuses on fluency, reasoning, and application.
GCSE: Students sit three exam papers: one non-calculator and two calculator papers for their GCSE Mathematics. Ongoing mock exams, regular end of unit test, and feedback sessions are used to close knowledge gaps.
Future Pathways
Mathematics is a gateway to careers in finance, engineering, computing, architecture, data analysis, science, medicine, psychology, AI and more. It is a vital qualification for many A-Level and university courses.
