Primary Enrichment

We believe that every child, regardless of background or ability, should have equitable access to enriching activities and experiences that help them discover their passion, purpose and place in the world. Key to that is an enriched, multi-dimensional education that supports their social and emotional development and helps them develop essential skills for Langdon and beyond (life and work). Enriching a child’s life, both inside and outside of formal education, with meaningful learning opportunities and experiences is essential.

What is Enrichment

School enrichment refers to activities and experiences that go beyond the core curriculum to broaden students’ knowledge, skills, and cultural understanding. It is not a replacement for what happens in lessons. It is an extension of it — designed to deepen learning, open new doors, and give children experiences they would not otherwise access.

The key distinction is between the taught curriculum (what appears on the timetable) and the wider curriculum (everything else the school deliberately provides to develop children as learners and as people). Crucially, good enrichment is not random. It is planned with intent, delivered with quality, and evaluated for impact — just like any other part of our school’s provision.

Enrichment and Student Development

There is strong evidence that enrichment activities contribute to student outcomes in ways that go beyond attainment data. Children who participate in high-quality enrichment are more likely to develop confidence, resilience, teamwork skills, and a broader sense of what is possible in their lives. For disadvantaged pupils in particular, enrichment can be transformative — providing exposure to careers, skills, and experiences that their home circumstances may not offer.

Enrichment also plays a critical role in engagement. Children and individuals with talents different from one another – some children thrive in sporting activities, whilst others accelerate in the arts. Effective enrichment compliments and supports progress in different areas of a child’s learning journey.

“Curriculum and enrichment: Every child will benefit from a refreshed and broad National Curriculum that secures knowledge and delivers key skills, alongside a wide range of enriching opportunities within and beyond the curriculum, delivered through a new enrichment entitlement” DfE 2026

Enrichment Framework

Our framework encompasses the eight enrichment benchmarks set out by the DfE in June 2026 and highlight the five domains within enrichment at Langdon Academy.

  • Civic engagement, for example volunteering, debating, school and college democracy, community engagement
  • Arts and culture, for example, taking part in and having live experience of music, art, dance, theatre, other expressive arts, visits to museums and galleries
  • Nature, outdoors and adventure, for example time outdoors, climate education and sustainability projects, gardening, residentials and camps
  • Sport and physical activities, for example participating in individual and team sports, physical activities like dance, fitness activities or cycling, representing the school or college, attending live events
  • Developing wider life and future skills, for example digital literacy, STEM clubs, cooking, managing finances and enterprise
